Currently, there's only one train from Kolkata to Kathgodam, which is always packed, leaving Gorakhpur passengers with little to no chance of getting a berth. This new route will address the lack of trains and the long waiting list, especially during peak seasons like summer vacations. The 30 km broad gauge line from Mailani to Shahgarh has already been completed and approved by the CRS. The NER can now operate trains on this new route independently, based on their own schedule and convenience, as they will no longer rely on the Northern Railway for path approval. This new route eliminates the current dependence on the congested route through Bareilly.
