Railway officials say passenger revenue only covers 30% to 35% of expenses, with freight transport making up the rest. This contrasts with other transport options: BEST buses charge 5 rupees for every 2.5 kilometers, taxis charge 18.6 rupees per kilometer, auto-rickshaws 15.5 rupees per kilometer, Ola/Uber premium cars 25-30 rupees per kilometer, and the metro 3-3.5 rupees per kilometer.

lagbhag 3.7 million passengers ko le jaata hai, aur badhte kharche ke baavjud, suburban fares 13 saal se nahi badhe hain. Railway officials ka kehna hai ki passenger revenue se sirf 30% se 35% kharche cover hote hain, baki freight transport se aata hai.
