The delay was attributed to the requirement to manufacture 94% of the coaches in India under the Make-in-India policy, and the difficulty in finding a local manufacturer. The contract was signed in December 2019, and the deadline was December 2023. The arrival of the first train set marks a resolution to a long-standing dispute between BMRCL and the Chinese manufacturer, CRRC Nanjing Puzhen Co Ltd. Out of the 36 train sets, 15 will be driverless and based on the Communications-Based Train Control (CTBC) System model. These will be deployed on the Yellow Line. The remaining 21 trains will be conventional and used for Phase-I extension lines. The line is expected to become operational by September after various tests and approvals are completed.
