Extending the train service is expected to reduce the strain on the Thiruvananthapuram-Mumbai Netravati Express and the Parasuram Express to Mangalore. The Shoranur-Kannur-Shoranur Unreserved Special Express (06031/06032) covers over 200 km and has a minimum fare of Rs. 30, while regular passenger train fares are Rs. 10. Usually, trains traveling over 200 km are classified as express services. However, the Shoranur-Kannur route is only 176 km long, falling under the special service category to manage congestion.
