Extending metro from Kochi to Thrissur will require policy change: Loknath Behra

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) managing director Loknath Behra stated that extending the metro route from Ernakulam to Thrissur would require a policy change from the Central Government. Currently, metro extensions beyond a single city are not permitted, with the Delhi-NCR connection being the sole exception. Behra mentioned that Union Minister...

Suresh Gopi discussed the extension and was informed about the policy change requirement, with Gopi assuring necessary interventions. However, due to the lack of a policy, KMRL cannot currently conduct a feasibility study. The estimated construction cost for 1 KM of metro is Rs 250 Crore. Behra also emphasized that the Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode metro projects are being prioritized by the government, with a decision on the Thiruvananthapuram alignment soon. Five alignments have been considered based on DMRC suggestions and public input, and the government will choose the most feasible option. A project outline will be prepared by DMRC, followed by securing funding after State Cabinet and Centre approval. The Kozhikode metro route, planned to be 14 km long, is still under discussion regarding the specific type of metro system to be implemented. The second phase of the Kochi metro, from Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium to Kakkanad, will begin construction soon, with a casting yard at HMT. Trial services are scheduled to commence on this route in March 2026. A comprehensive transport plan for the third phase (Aluva to Angamaly and Nedumbasserry) has been created and will be discussed at a meeting with relevant agencies. Regarding the Water Metro, 15 additional boats are being procured, with the current 14 boats proving insufficient. Revenue generation strategies include naming stations after commercial establishments and developing surrounding areas with restaurants and offices. Kochi Metro reported increased operating profit and passenger numbers this year. Efforts are ongoing to boost non-ticket revenue and passenger numbers. The feasibility study for a Brisbane-model light tram service in Kochi, covering 6.5 km from MG Road metro station to Thevara, has been completed by the Hess Green Mobility group. The government will review its technical feasibility before authorizing further action.

Kochi Metro Rail Limited (KMRL) ke managing director Loknath Behra ne kaha ki Ernakulam se Thrissur tak metro route ko extend karne ke liye Central Government ko apni metro policy mein change karna padega. Abhi ke policy ke according, ek city se aage metro ko extend nahi kiya ja sakta hai,...

Delhi-NCR connection iska ek exception hai. 1 KM metro ke construction cost ka estimate Rs 250 Crore hai. Behra ne yeh bhi bataya ki Thiruvananthapuram aur Kozhikode metro projects ko government priority de raha hai, aur Thiruvananthapuram alignment ke baare mein jaldi decision aa jaayega. DMRC ke suggestions aur public input ke baad, 5 alignments par विचार किया गया है, aur government sabse feasible option ko choose karega. DMRC ek project outline prepare karega, aur State Cabinet aur Centre se approval milne ke baad funding secure ki jaayegi. Kozhikode metro route, jo 14 km lamba hone wala hai, usme kya type ka metro system implement kiya jaayega, us par abhi baat chal rahi hai. Kochi metro ka dusra phase, Kaloor Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium se Kakkanad tak, jaldi hi start hoga, jisme HMT pe ek casting yard hoga. Is route pe trial services March 2026 se start hone wali hain. Teesre phase (Aluva se Angamaly aur Nedumbasserry tak) ke liye ek comprehensive transport plan banaya gaya hai, jiske baare mein relevant agencies ke saath meeting jaldi hi hogi. Water Metro ke liye, 15 aur boats procure ki ja rahi hain, kyuki abhi ke 14 boats kaafi nahi hain. Revenue generate karne ke liye strategies mein stations ko commercial establishments ke naam par rakhna aur stations ke aas-paas restaurants aur offices develop karna shamil hai. Kochi Metro ne is saal apna operating profit aur passenger numbers badhaye hain. Non-ticket revenue aur passenger numbers badhane ke liye efforts chal rahe hain. Kochi mein Brisbane-model light tram service implement karne ki feasibility study, jo MG Road metro station se Thevara tak 6.5 km ka hai, Hess Green Mobility group ne complete kar liya hai. Government iske technical feasibility ko review karega, uske baad hi aage ka action liya jaayega.

Useful
This wont happen. Practically not possible and wont benefit people in any case. In a regular Express train if people travel, they will reach in about 1 hrs 10 min. The metro for such a huge distance of more than 70k will have many stops and practically wont benefit. The cost for 1 km is 250 crore so one can imagine what the cost will be for such a long distance. Up till Kochi airport they can possibly try but even then that will also be a huge expenditure
