According to Motihari MP Radha Mohan Singh, the Indian Railways transports 200 million passengers daily and 800 million annually, operates 1200 passenger express trains, and handled 151 billion tonnes of cargo in FY2022-23. The focus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has led to India's rapid growth in rail network infrastructure, adding 5243 kilometers of new lines in 2022-23 (equivalent to Switzerland's railway network) and a total of 25,434 kilometers (equivalent to Germany's rail network) in the past 9 years (2014-23). The railway budget for 2004-05 was 80 billion rupees.
